Consumers who act quickly, though, can stall off the impact of the increase.

The Postal Service on Friday filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission of mailing services price changes to take effect Jan. 21, 2024. The cost of mailing a 1-ounce letter will rise from 66 cents to 68 cents.

The cost of several other services also will increase.

“As inflationary pressures on operating expenses continue and the effects of a previously defective pricing model are still being felt, these price adjustments are needed to provide the Postal Service with much needed revenue to achieve the financial stability sought by its Delivering for America 10-year plan,” the Postal Service said. “The prices of the Postal Service remain among the most affordable in the world.”

The postal service said it will not change the additional-ounce price. It will stay at 24 cents. But charges for certified mail, post office box rental fees, money order fees and the cost to purchase insurance when mailing an item.

The rate changes will be the second in six months for the Postal Service. The cost of a 1-ounce letter went from 63 cents to 66 cents in July. Other rates also increased then.

Consumers can stall off the effects of the increase by stocking up on Forever Stamps ahead of time.

Once the rate increase takes effect, a book of 20 Forever Stamps will cost 40 cents more than it does today.

But since Forever Stamps, which do not carry a value on them, are good forever, customers can stall the impact of the rate increase by buying at the current rates.

Even when the cost rises to 68 cents a letter, the Forever Stamp purchased for 66 cents will remain valid.

That includes the Postal Service’s newest release honoring late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. That stamp was unveiled during a first-day-of-issue dedication ceremony Oct. 2 at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery

“Justice Ginsburg was an iconic figure who dedicated her life to public service and the pursuit of justice,” USPS Board of Governors Chairman Roman Martinez IV said at the ceremony. “She was a true pioneer, and it is our honor to celebrate her incredible legacy in this way. This stamp serves not just as a tribute but as an inspiration for future generations to uphold the values she fought for.”
