Emerson's new Copeland CO2 Semi-Hermetic Compressor

The U.S.-based manufacturer Emerson has announced the expansion of its Copeland transcritical CO2 (R744) semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors with the release of model 4MTLS28ME, which offers the “largest” displacement in the lineup.

The new compressor can be used as a standard medium-temperature compressor, as well as a parallel compressor in transcritical booster systems. Compressor Rack Unit

“This new model has a wide operating envelope,” said Emerson, in a statement. It offers more design flexibility, and in some applications, may reduce the number of compressors needed on a transcritical CO2 rack, the company added.

The expansion extends the capacity of Copeland’s transcritical CO2 semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor lineup to 303 kBTU/hour (25.3TR/89kW) at 20°F (-7°C) saturated suction, 1,290psi (89bar) discharge pressure and 95°F (35°F) gas cooler outlet, Emerson said. The compressor modulates from 30 to 60hz, allowing for “precise” load matching to support system operation.

“This compressor has best-in-class performance in the industry,” said Derek Langenkamp, Product Manager for CO2 and Semi-Hermetics, for Emerson’s Climate Technologies Business, “with excellent oil carry-over rates validated with extensive testing.”

“The Copeland transcritical CO2 semi-hermetic portfolio overall has low sound and vibration across the operating envelope,” Langenkamp added, meaning “lower noise levels” for end users and “less stress on the piping system” for OEMs.

“Our customers are facing three key challenges: demanding regulations, the desire for more sustainability and the impact of urbanization,” said Thomas Tomski, Vice President of End Users at Emerson Commercial & Residential Solutions.

“The U.S. refrigeration market is poised for a surge in the use of CO2 (R744) to achieve sustainability and regulatory compliance goals,” Emerson said. The new Copeland transcritical CO2 semi-hermetic compressor expands Emerson’s integrated CO2 portfolio, which includes compressors, controls, case controls, drives and valves.

The semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor is the latest in Emerson’s offering of CO2 compressors. In the fall of 2021, Emerson unveiled its CO2 scroll compressor with new dynamic vapor injection (DVI) technology, “eliminating the need for parallel compression,” the company said. This line of Copeland CO2 scroll compressors is also designed for CO2 booster systems and uses “smart electronics.”

DVI injects vapor refrigerant directly from the flash tank (or an economizer) into the scroll compressor via an injection valve. The CO2 scroll compressors come in three ranges, one for medium-temperature applications and two for low-temperature operations.

Earlier this month, Emerson launched the “industry’s first” transcritical CO2 screw compressor designed “for the rigors of high-pressure industrial CO2 refrigeration,” said Emerson.

“The new Vilter transcritical CO2 compressor is based on proven single-screw compression technology,” said Gary Chafee, Business Development Manager for Industrial CO2 Solutions, for Emerson’s Climate Technologies business. “[It] features a complete packaged solution built for heavy-duty industrial requirements and rated for CO2 transcritical pressures,” he added.

Copeland compressors contain onboard electronics protection, said Emerson, providing data during system installation, start-up and commissioning and enabling technicians to “quickly” diagnose and repair operating systems.

Emerson displayed the new Vilter transcritical and subcritical CO2 compressors and its largest Copeland transcritical CO2 semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor at the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) 2023 Natural Refrigeration Expo held in Long Beach, California from March 12 to 15.

Founded in 1890, Emerson is a global technology and engineering company providing solutions to meet sustainability goals for refrigeration, heating and air-conditioning, monitoring systems and facility controls for industrial, commercial and residential markets.
