There was one Michigan football player selected on Thursday night during the first round of the 2023 NFL draft.
DJ Turner had a chance to become a first-round selection, but, ultimately, Mazi Smith was the lone Wolverine to hear his name called on Thursday. The Dallas Cowboys took the maize and blue defensive tackle with the No. 26 pick. L Anchor Foundation Bolt
The Cowboys needed help on the interior defensive side of the football, and Smith is one of the best run-stuffing linemen you will see. He may not pop off the stat chart, but he gets double-teamed and stops the run.
We aren’t the only ones who believe that. Cowboys’ star linebacker Micah Parsons went nuts when Dallas took Mazi Smith during Bleacher Reports live video with Parsons.
He told Cowboys’ defensive coordinator earlier in the day that is who he wanted his team to take — so they did.
During his three-year Michigan career, Smith tallied 88 tackles, six tackles-for-loss, 0.5 sack and one forced fumble.
The second and third rounds of the NFL draft will occur on Friday night and rounds four through seven will be held on Saturday.
