Scientists from the National Research University "MPEI" have developed software for the rapid design and prototyping of turboexpanders, as well as for constructing their characteristics in off-design modes.

A turboexpander is a low-temperature turbine, the main task of which is to lower the gas pressure in order to reduce the temperature of the gas and remove energy from it due to mechanical work performed by the gas. Ci854bk01

The developed software allows you to quickly assess the current power and efficiency of a turbine unit when switching to off-design mode without carrying out lengthy and expensive tests.The software works based on the parameter values ​​at the input and output of the stage, and can determine the required rotor shaft speed to ensure the maximum possible efficiency and power of the unit for a given mode.

The developed software package consists of two modules.The first module allows for the rapid construction of stage elements of radial turbomachines for subsequent prototyping, which significantly simplifies the work of designers and does not require deep knowledge of flow expansion processes.The second module allows you to build a map of turbine efficiency in a wide range of initial data.

Software modules were developed, tested and registered under the guidance of Associate Professor of the Department of Low Temperatures of the National Research University "MPEI" Arseny Yastrebov as part of the work on the Russian Science Foundation project No. 23-29-00540 "Numerical modeling of phase transitions in the flow part of refrigeration and cryogenic vapor-liquid turbine units."
