The Sylvan Lake Urgent Care Committee saw a successful year in 2023 - Sylvan Lake News

Last year the Sylvan Lake Urgent Care Committee (UCC) had a successful year purchasing an Oxygen Concentrator and a Broselow Cart for the Advanced Ambulatory Care Service (AACS).

An Oxygen Concentrator uses the air in the atmosphere, filters it, and gives the patient air that is 90 to 95 per cent oxygen. Oxygen Concentrator 15 Lpm

A Broselow cart, which allows for easy access to pediatric supplies, including Broselow tape, is used to rapidly estimate the weight of a child so that medication doses, intubation tube sizes, and other things can be done in an emergency.

The Oxygen Concentrator valued at $2,467 and the Broselow Cart valued at $3,500 were items requested by the manager at the AACS, UCC chair Susan Samson said.

“The manager of the AACS is limited by the size and the scope of services as to which pieces of medical equipment can be used in their setting.”

For people who work at the AACS, like Dr. Marc-André Filion, the purchase of a Broselow cart is very meaningful.

“This is especially meaningful to me as I had a case in the AACS this past year where we had to manage a child in critical condition but didn’t have an easily accessible Broselow tape or well-organized pediatric supplies. This added a tremendous amount of stress to an already challenging situation,” Filion said.

Since opening in 2018, the UCC has spent approximately $845,000 on medical equipment used at the AACS, Samson said.

“We fundraise every year and accept donations which are held in trust to support the operations of the AACS.”
